In 2001 vandals broke into the room which housed a unique collection of historic village records, maps and old photographs. As a result, a small number of concerned local historians took charge of the documents to ensure their protection. The Defence Academy offered to safeguard this collection for the Shrivenham and District Archive Group until such time as a more suitable location could be found. When it became known that the archives were being so adequately guarded, more items were offered up for safe keeping. The collection started to grow. In 2007, Shrivenham's Viscountess Barrington Trust approved the use of a previously under-utilised area of The Memorial Hall as a facility to be known as The Shrivenham Heritage Centre, a committee was elected to build suitable premises and to bring the archives home. The purpose of our new Centre, as well as safeguarding this growing collection of documents, images and artefacts is to make them more easily accessible to the people for whom they are held in trust by locating them back in the village, cataloguing them and displaying them in an attractive manner. |
